Homework for the Break

This was sent to you by email, but I'll put it here too in case you can't download it.

OK, Tigard, here’s your homework for over the break. I am serious about this, and you should expect a test of your knowledge and skills when you get back. This is a large list, but keep reading OK?

I fear many of you are stuck in our Oregon/Washington ways of color guard. I hate to tell you this, but our circuit is about 10 years behind the rest of the nation in the guard world. I want you to do some watching of YouTube videos to see what is out there in the world of winter guard.

Here are some videos I want you to watch… and watch them more than once. Notice that it’s not about how clean you are; it’s about how you present your show.

These are independent groups (from age 8 to 22 generally):
1. Santa Clara Vanguard winter guard 2008 – Dave’s guard he grew from nothing to World Class in 3 years. They were 4th at WGI championships this April.
2. Northern Lights 2006 – Imagine
3. Fantasia during any year. 2000 and 2008 were hot.
4. Pride of Cincinnati – I couldn’t find anything yet, but try… they are AWESOME

These are HIGH SCHOOLS. Yes, high schools.
1. James Logan High School – specifically their TKO show from 2002 and Spirite 2006 show. This is a group of high school students who live in a very poor, very gang infested, very abusive and violent part of the bay area. They pay over $2,000 for winter guard alone and travel to WGI championships every year (except last year when they went to Beijing for the Olympics). Think twice before complaining about your fees. You get what you pay for. Period. Also, Dave taught this rifle line twice a week from 1998 to 2005. Watch for his work. Oh btw, they won WGI world class every year (I think) from 1998 to 2007. They are unbeatable right now.
2. Avon High School – built from a nothing program in 1993 to the world class runner up in 2008.
3. Mount Carmel High School 2008 – This is a Class A guard. We want to be a Class A guard this year. This placed 2nd at WGI nationals in April. SECOND. Compare us to them. How do we compare to this A class guard?

Spend time looking at the suggested guards on the side as you watch these. Here are last year’s WGI championship top 3 in each class if you want to see more.

Scholastic A – 1.Colonial HS 2.Mount Carmel HS 3.Pope HS
Scholastic Open – 1.Northmont HS 2.Freedom HS 3.West Orange HS
Scholastic World – 1.Flanagan HS 2. Avon HS 3.Center Grove HS
Independent A – 1.Cascades 2.Interplay 3.Capella
Independent Open – 1.Alter Ego 2.Diamente 3.The Academy
Independent World – 1.Fantasia 2.Pride of Cincinnati 3.Northeast

Next, you need to be able to fill in the drill for your show. You need to know how your show is put together in words. I know the counts aren’t possible for varsity yet but be able to describe how it works. When we move, how we end, etc.

JV-You alone will perform the drop spin exercise and flourish exercise (both hands) in front of both teams, Lulu, Dylan, and me. Be ready.

Varsity, you need to be able to toss and catch correctly up to a triple with your sabre. You also will need to spin 100 spins both hands with the transition. Dropping is not an option. You will perform for Dylan and I but be prepared to spin in front of both guards. How do you want to look in front of your peers?
Also Varsity, you will perform our flag feature for each other. Know it and get it right.

Dedicate time to making this guard better. The more you know, the more prepared you are for making this guard better than when we left it in December. Because it needs to be. Thank you.

JV Listen up!!

I need your money for your uniform! You need $31.92 for part of the uniform. It will be due Friday 12/18. I will post on what to do if school is canceled. Make the check to Tigard Band and Color Guard Boosters and put it in the black box in the band room in an envelope marked with your name and what the money is for. The rest of your uniform (to be determined) will be due in January.
Thanks!

PAY YOUR FEES

I know we aren't at the school, but find a way to contact the booster Treasurer. They will not release money to buy uniforms until you guys start paying. This is both JV and Varsity. As it is, we won't get uniforms until 2 weeks before our first show. If we wait, it may not make it. CALL OR EMAIL THE TREASURER. NOW.
